As organizations scale their governance programs, adopt AI, and manage increasingly complex data ecosystems, one truth is clearer than ever:
You can’t govern what you can’t trust, and you can’t trust what you can’t validate.
Atlan provides the visibility and context data teams rely on to discover and understand their data. Great Expectations provides the validation and quality signals teams depend on to know whether that data is fit for use.
Together, we’re making it possible for enterprises to govern, discover, and confidently use their data at scale with data quality embedded directly into the systems where people work every day.
Why This Integration Matters Right Now
The modern data stack has grown more powerful, and more complex, than anyone predicted. Data teams now span engineers, analysts, scientists, PMs, and business users. Workflows span dozens of tools. And governance practices are shifting from top-down rules to bottom-up collaboration.
Across all of this change, one theme is driving enterprise decision-making:
Data quality has become the critical pillar of modern data governance.
Poor data quality already costs U.S. businesses $3.1 trillion annually, and as AI adoption accelerates, the consequences of low-quality data grow exponentially. AI models built on untrustworthy data routinely underperform, costing organizations hundreds of millions in lost revenue.
Enterprises aren’t just buying tools anymore, they’re buying peace of mind that their data is findable, usable, and trustworthy. That’s what this partnership provides organizations with.
The Challenge: Data Without Trust Slows Everyone Down
Most organizations face the same pain points in data discovery:
Teams can find data but still cannot use it because they don’t know whether to trust it.
Stakeholders hesitate to rely on datasets without clarity on quality or recency.
Engineers learn about issues too late after downstream consumers have already been impacted.
Fragmented tools create fragmented mental models.
Governance frameworks break down if the catalog surfaces assets that haven’t been validated.
This is why leading data teams increasingly require a first-class data quality layer that provides an operational foundation, not a bolted on, manual process.
Great Expectations brings that foundation directly into Atlan.
Introducing the GX × Atlan Integration
You can now install and configure Great Expectations directly from the Atlan Marketplace. This enables teams to operationalize data quality with:
Secure, seamless configuration (credentials stored in Vault)
Mapping GX Data Sources to Atlan assets without custom engineering
Automated or scheduled metadata syncs from GX → Atlan
Cross-navigation between tools
Atlan users can see GX validation health directly on assets
GX Cloud users can click back into Atlan to view the asset in context
Together, this establishes a modern governance experience where:
Atlan = governance + discovery + context
GX = quality + validation + operational trust
This is how governance becomes intuitive, actionable, and scalable.
How It Works: A Unified Feedback Loop Between Trust & Context
When GX’s validation signals become part of Atlan’s active metadata platform, data governance becomes “always-on.”
Across the catalog, GX metadata appears exactly where teams need to see it. In the Atlan sidebar, you’ll see instantly visible quality indicators like the total Expectations validated, Critical / Warning / Info / Success counts, and a link to the latest validation result.

When you click into the sidebar, you’ll see a breakdown of Expectation statuses from Success to Failed, more detailed metrics, and be able to drill-through into GX Cloud for deeper investigation.

You’ll also be able to see the latest validation status and whether a dataset is reliable as you browse multiple datasets in the assets list.
We also make data quality markers visible in the Lineage graphs so you can see what impacts quality issues have upstream and downstream and troubleshoot issues quickly.

By the way, every data asset in GX Cloud now includes a “View in Atlan” link, powered by Atlan’s qualifiedName → GX UUID mapping workflow.
This allows Atlan users to explore the broader context for an Asset and take advantage of its data lineage capabilities to better determine the root cause for a failed quality test.
This completes the feedback loop: Quality signals flow into Atlan; context flows into GX.
Why we’re excited about this partnership
With Great Expectations and Atlan working together, teams have the structure they need to ensure only high-quality, trustworthy data is used to drive decisions and fuel the next generation of data-driven innovation.
By combining data quality signals with lineage, ownership, and documentation in a single experience, teams no longer have to guess whether a dataset is safe to use or chase answers across Slack threads and disconnected tools.
Data quality becomes visible early, directly in the places where people discover and evaluate data, allowing issues to be identified and addressed before they impact downstream consumers.
Making Modern Data Governance Real
Data governance succeeds only when teams can trust their data.
Atlan gives organizations the visibility, collaboration, and context needed to navigate and unlock value from a modern data and AI ecosystem. Great Expectations provides the validation and quality foundation required to ensure that data is reliable for analytics, AI, compliance, and operations.
Together, we’re building the governance layer the modern enterprise, and the AI-powered future depends on.
